"The honey bee solution to varroa" by Steve Riley
Steve is the Education Office and former Chair of Westerham Beekeepers, a club in the south-east of England.
He is the author of “The Honey Bee Solution to Varroa” and a member of the “Path to Varroa-Resistance in the UK” team that launched the education and science website: www.varroaresistant.uk in April 2023.
Steve presents on varroa resistance to beekeeping associations around the UK, including at the National Honey Show and BBKA Spring Convention

Steve hails from the Surrey/Kent area and is the Chairperson and education officer of the Westerham Beekeepers. In 2017 his association decided to transition away from Chemical treatment to non chemical treatment that has now resulted in identifying varroa resistant traits that means it is no longer necessary to treat their bees with any chemical or biochemical methods. He believes this is the way forward for all beekeepers by ensuring that varroa and honey bees are in equilibrium with the colony, not only surviving after three years, but flourishing and producing sufficient amounts of honey.

Asian Hornet - Awareness and preparedness

                                                                                 By Frankie de Dobblaere

A 1 hour lecture followed by a Q & A. Making beekeepers aware of the seriousness and threat , and how to prepare against asian hornets.

  • The Asian hornet is a highly effective predator of honey bees, wasps and other important pollinators, such as hoverflies. The huge size of its colonies (consisting of up to 10,000 individuals per season) means that they can rapidly decimate entire beehives. Observations in France noted losses of 14,000 honey bees per hive per month.
